Driving in Mauritius

Arguably one of the most ideal ways to see Mauritius in all it's glory is to hire a car and have the freedom to drive around the island by yourself. Simply park by the pump, and an attendant will come to your window. Tell him how much to put in (Cinq cent rupee's sil vous plait (500 Rupees(about £10))) at a time is usually the best way to go. This way you won't under or over fill, and it's easier not to confuse yourself with how much you're puitting in. Driving style is very unique in Mauritius and can be a little daunting at first. Roads are sometimes narrow, and most people will find it's often easier to take a laid-back attitude and give way if you're not sure who has right of way. All licenced rental cars have yellow number plates, so local drivers understand that you are out of town and are usually very understanding.
