Ever since the dutch came to mauritius and began to colonise the island, sugar cane until recently has been Mauritius' number one source of income. Thought tourism has overtaken it in recent years, sugar still represents 25% of the country's gross export earnings. Inland throughout the island you will see many many fields of sugar cane being planted, grown and harvested and view the part of Mauritius' history which gave it the income to pregress and evolve into what it is today. If you happen to visit in season, be sure to take a minute to buy some raw sugar cane and taste it in all it's natural glory right off the cane. Guaranteed to make your mouth water, although probably not the best thing for a child's teeth!
